Choose the view for the question

When you open the map to orient yourself, you usually need your surroundings and what you have explored. A dense line from the whole day can obscure both. When you review an afternoon afterward, the actual path becomes useful evidence of where the day went.

Those tasks deserve different emphasis. Nowhop keeps the main map focused on its terrain and Fog, while the selected day in Hop and Passport can show recorded geometry. You do not need to choose between a clear main screen and having a route archive.

Let reveal describe coverage

A revealed corridor can show that you explored an area without making every raw point the visual focus. Repeated movement over the same ground does not need to produce a brighter stack of competing strokes. Appearance settings change how that record looks, not whether a journey happened.

Fog strength and map style therefore remain presentation controls. Turning Fog down is not the same as clearing history, and choosing another terrain concept should not grant new explored area.

Use the route when detail matters

Open the relevant day if you want to inspect a detour, compare moments with movement or understand a gap. A route line should stop where the evidence stops. A beautiful connection across an unobserved tunnel would be less truthful than a visible break.

Plan has a different line: the intended route between scheduled places. Do not use it as a replacement for missing observations. A planned café and a recorded path near it also do not establish that you entered the venue.

Keep recording quality independent of styling

Location estimates have uncertainty; Apple defines this explicitly in its horizontal-accuracy documentation. Stationary jitter still needs filtering even when its line is hidden. The current development build preserves old records while applying its newer movement policy to new observations.

For a useful personal check, take a short familiar route, then inspect the day detail. Compare the actual street sequence and gaps, not just the visual appeal of the Fog. A browser sample cannot validate your physical phone’s recording conditions.

Questions this guide answers

Does no permanent line mean the walk is not saved?

No. Visibility and storage are separate. The main map can emphasize exploration while the selected day in Hop or Passport provides a more detailed recorded route.

Can I use Plan’s line as proof of the route I took?

No. It represents intended stops and available directions. Only accepted movement observations establish the recorded route; a scheduled route cannot repair missing GPS.

Does changing Fog or a theme change my distance?

It should not. Styling controls presentation. Recorded distance and unique explored area come from the underlying accepted records, not the opacity or color of the map.

Why might two apps draw the same walk differently?

They may sample, filter and simplify differently. Nowhop’s bounded road-oriented presentation is reversible and does not overwrite raw coordinates or prove lane accuracy. A visual comparison alone is not a controlled accuracy test.

Can a clean map recover my exact indoor movements?

No. The app does not reconstruct room-by-room movement from weak GPS or guarantee drift-free indoor tracking. Simplifying a view must not be mistaken for discovering observations the phone never supplied.
