Compare two simple outings
Consider a two-kilometer loop repeated on consecutive days. Both days can contain roughly two kilometers of recorded movement if the observations support it. The second outing does not make the same corridor new again. A shorter detour onto another street may add more new area than the longer repeat.
This is why one dashboard total cannot answer every question. Distance helps describe the journey’s extent. New area helps distinguish familiar ground from an added exploration. A city percentage adds another requirement: a valid boundary denominator.
Avoid turning movement into an activity claim
A route recorded on a bicycle or train is still movement. The current policy supports normal faster journeys and uses observation evidence to filter anomalies. It does not infer a reliable fitness activity from every accepted coordinate.
When interpreting the history, use the term recorded distance unless the mode is actually established. A large total is not necessarily a long walk, calories burned or a workout. A discovery transport selection expresses how you intend to reach a candidate; it does not label later observations automatically.
Do not confuse drawing with calculation
A wide map can simplify the visible path and show a bounded sample of explored cells to remain responsive. Those display choices should not become new stored measurements. Similarly, a heavier Fog treatment or taller building style does not change the journey.
Both measures depend on usable observations. Apple’s Location Services guidance provides context for accuracy limitations. Gaps should not be converted into an exact line simply to make a distance look complete. Nowhop remains a personal development app, not a surveying or exercise-validation instrument.
Questions this guide answers
Can I challenge friends on a daily walking leaderboard?
No competitive leaderboard or built-in friends feed is implemented. The current milestones are personal and cosmetic; recorded movement is not automatically a walking workout or a social ranking.
Why does distance increase but the level barely move?
The current level follows unique explored area. Repeating a familiar path can add recorded distance without adding enough new cells to reach another area milestone.
Is city percentage the share of streets traveled?
No. It compares explored area inside a verified city polygon with the polygon’s area. A street-network percentage would require a different dataset and calculation.
Can I compare totals from different apps directly?
Only after checking definitions, filters, boundaries and gaps. Matching units do not guarantee matching observation policies or the same meaning behind a total.
