Compare the same neighborhood
Start in an area with recognizable buildings, roads and a park. Keep the camera in approximately the same position while trying styles. That makes it easier to judge road readability, building height and contrast than comparing two unrelated screenshots.
Choosing a style saves the selection and closes the appearance sheet. The original Apple Maps choice sits among the options rather than requiring you to infer a separate reset. MapKit remains the map platform; the stylized views use additional public geometry for their own drawing.
Adjust Fog independently
Fog controls the obscuring treatment over unexplored surroundings. Turning it off should still leave the selected terrain style visible. Likewise, switching from Quartz to Voxel should not erase progress or count the same ground as newly explored.
Try one familiar road with Fog off, then with a lighter setting. The useful question is whether the route and surroundings remain understandable. A more dramatic surface is not necessarily the easiest one to read while finding a doorway.
Distinguish the look from data availability
Moving into a new area can require more public geometry. A theme cannot manufacture a missing building footprint or a verified height. Saved nearby data can be reused, but globally complete detail is not guaranteed. Apple’s own offline Maps feature is separate from this app’s geometry cache.

Is a theme just a color filter over Apple Maps?
No. The themed buildings and roads use independent public geometry over MapKit. The selected presentation persists while an area loads; additional detail may arrive later. Choosing Original is an explicit appearance choice, not the intended loading fallback.
Will changing style reset my exploration?
No. Appearance and exploration records are separate. The same accepted movement should remain available when you change a theme or Fog strength.
Is there an unfiltered map option?
Yes. The original Apple Maps option is selectable in Map appearance alongside the custom presentations. It is not a separate app or a new source of personal records.
Does a building’s height prove an exact real-world measurement?
No. Available geometry and theme rendering determine its visual treatment. Do not use a stylized scene as a survey, accessibility plan or building-height authority.
