Think of scenery and memories as separate files

The footprint of a public building is not the same data as the time you walked past it. A terrain pack supplies reusable scenery. A movement record preserves your own observation. Keeping those responsibilities separate lets the app change a visual style without changing personal history.

The current implementation selects nearby geometry and reuses prepared drawing data. GPS updates and Fog changes do not require rebuilding an entire neighborhood. That separation is especially useful when the phone is recording without you actively browsing the map.

Load a working area, not the whole world

A global app does not need a globe’s worth of detailed buildings in RAM. Nowhop bounds its prepared working set and keeps reusable data on disk. Moving or zooming can bring another area into that working set; data availability still depends on the published packs and a connection for new downloads.

A broad view should not be confused with full street-level detail for every country. Disk capacity, temporary rendering memory and download size are different limits. A single overall megabyte number would hide those differences.

Prepare for an offline day with realistic expectations

Previously available geometry can support a themed view without another download. New place search, street imagery and directions remain separate services. Apple’s offline-map guide describes downloads in Apple Maps, not an automatic transfer of those resources into every MapKit app.

Before travel, inspect the places and plans you expect to need. Keep an independent navigation option prepared. The development build’s caching design is not a promise that every scene or service will function everywhere without a connection, and a sample web map cannot test the phone’s cache.

Questions this guide answers

Can Nowhop recolor every proprietary Apple building through a raw-geometry API?

No. That is not this implementation. MapKit remains the base platform, while independent public building and road geometry supplies the themed landscape and map-enabled movies. The movie renderer does not capture Apple map tiles or Look Around pixels.

Is offline terrain my private GPS history?

No. Terrain means reusable public map geometry. Your accepted movement, photos, clips and plans are stored as personal records with separate purposes and recovery needs.

Will saving more areas fill RAM permanently?

No. Stored files can outlive the smaller prepared working set used for rendering. There is still memory and storage cost; it is bounded rather than claimed to be zero.

Are downloaded map packs included in my originals backup?

No. The manual backup focuses on personal records and captured originals. Rebuildable public map caches are excluded and may need downloading again after restoration.
