Compare the same kind of day

A phone showing a bright, moving map for an hour is doing different work from one recording in a pocket. Camera capture, movie export, network requests and screen brightness also affect the day. Compare similar durations and behavior before blaming one background service.

A useful check is a familiar route with the same phone settings, followed by a normal stationary period. Review whether the movement was recorded and inspect iPhone battery information. A single Simulator run cannot measure physical GPS or radio energy.

Let recording and rendering do different jobs

The current development build adapts sampling to foreground and Low Power Mode conditions. Map geometry is prepared separately from GPS and Fog changes, and only a bounded working set is kept ready for drawing. A widget reads a small local summary; it does not run a second GPS recorder.

These are implementation details with a practical purpose: the phone should not reconstruct a neighborhood whenever a new location arrives. They reduce avoidable work, but they are not a reason to claim recording is free.

Treat access as a condition, not a guarantee

Nowhop explains the background access it needs and shows when the requested setup is missing. iOS remains in control of delivery. Apple’s background-location documentation and energy guidance describe the platform constraints developers must work within.

If a day is incomplete, inspect permission, signal and app state before assuming a speed limit caused it. Do not turn off every protective system setting in pursuit of a visually perfect line. This is a development build; device-level measurements remain part of release work.

Questions this guide answers

Does Always permission mean continuous perfect GPS?

No. It permits a category of background access; it does not guarantee accurate updates through buildings, tunnels, system interruptions or a force-quit.

Does leaving the map open improve battery life?

An illuminated display and live map add work. Keep the screen open when you need it, not as a supposed battery optimization for background recording.

Does exporting a video run all day?

No. Daily Hop encoding starts after your Create video action. Saving a moment does not schedule a continuous background render or automatic social upload.
